Can you sign car sale documents electronically?

The title needs wet ink

The title is state-issued paper, and signing it is what transfers ownership. States commonly require that signature on the document itself, often in front of a notary or two witnesses.

An electronically signed title is not the same document. Send it in that way and it gets rejected at the counter — after the buyer has driven off.

A few states run their own electronic titling. Those are operated by the state, not by a signing service.

Everything around it is different

The bill of sale, the as-is acknowledgment, the deposit agreement, the receipt, the disclosure sheet — those are agreements between two people.

Federal law (E-SIGN) and the state versions of UETA generally give an electronic signature the same effect as a written one for agreements like those.

So you can do the paperwork electronically and still have to meet to sign the title.

Your PDF does not need fillable fields

This is the common worry and it is unfounded. A signing service does not need a prepared form.

Most services also place fields automatically by matching text on the page — usually called anchor text. Label your lines clearly and the fields land where they belong.

Two things to keep in mind

• Where a state wants initials beside a paragraph, that is an attention requirement. Electronic initials are usually valid — the point is that somebody read it, so do not let clicking through defeat that.
• Download the finished PDFs. The service keeps an audit trail, which is useful evidence, but it is an account you have to keep access to.
